The Importance of Inner Health

Obesity is one of the leading risk factors contributing to chronic diseases. And let's face it, Australia is a nation growing rapidly in terms of obesity.

However, did you know that even a thin person could be dangerously unhealthy? This is now known as 'ToFi' - thin on the outside, fat on the inside or normal weight obesity. Overweight, normal weight and even under weight people can be susceptible to visceral fats.

While an over abundance of subcutaneous fatty tissue is not healthy, it is healthy to maintain a certain level of these fats. However, visceral fats collect around and clog organs, creating a significant health risk. They are also major contributors to health issues such as Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure and even cancer. The good news is chronic disease caused by obesity is preventable or manageable.

The most widely used measure of body fat is the body mass index (BMI). However, BMI does not differentiate between athletic and non-athletic body compositions; it fails to reveal age-related changes; it does not detect gender differences during growth and development stages; nor does it detect, measure or monitor visceral fats.

Tanita's InnerScan® Body Composition Monitors use Bioelectric Impedance Analysis (BIA) technology, which do all of the above, measuring you from your inside out. Through its body scanning process, BIA technology incorporates many important factors that are not accounted for when using BMI. Tanita's cutting-edge technology gives each individual their exact and unique measurements.

How is this done? BIA technology is a measuring of resistance to the flow of a safe, low-level electric current, which cannot be felt. This current travels through body fluids contained mainly in lean tissue where impedance is low. (Impedance is high in fat tissue.) Because BIA measures from the inside out, this advanced technology gives Tanita unmatched accuracy of your individual body measurements over an even wider range of important body elements including weight, body fat, visceral fat, muscle and bone masses, hydration level, metabolic age and rate, physique ranking and more.

Tanita

Tanita is the world leader in precision electronic scales. The company's success and expanding global presence is the result of superior technology, unique design, and high manufacturing standards that have earned ISO 9001 certification.

For the last 40 years of its 63-year history, Tanita's core business has been the manufacturing of precision scales. Today, Tanita is looking beyond scales to products that enable consumers to monitor their own health and fitness. Based on medical evidence linking excess body fat to heart

disease, diabetes and certain cancers, Tanita introduced the world's first integrated body composition monitor to the professional markets in 1992. Using the same technology used in their professional monitors, Tanita developed the world's first scale plus body fat monitor for home use in 1994. Tanita's accuracy innovation and durability are trusted worldwide.

This pioneering work has led to the creation of an entirely new category of consumer products that could make the conventional weight scale obsolete. Tanita's goal is to help people enjoy healthier lives. In 1990, the Tanita Best Weight Research and Development Center was established to fulfill this commitment. The Center, located in Tokyo, studies the relationship between a person's weight and well-being by analysing not only medical and nutritional conditions, but also the impact of physical activity, psychological stress and sociological factors.

The Science of a Healthy Metabolism

A healthy metabolism ensures that we are the same age inside our bodies as we are externally—an important assessment for all of us.

Tanita InnerScan models use Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) to create a picture of your inner health. Small electrodes in the surface of the scale send a safe current though your body that travels via water. Muscle contains a large amount of water making it easier for the current to pass through. Fats however contain little water which makes it difficult for the current to pass. This difficulty is measured as a resistance.

The InnerScan is able to measure the level of body fat by the amount of resistance the fats in your body provide. BIA technology provides you with a highly accurate reading (98% accuracy) of your muscle weight and body fat percentage.

Another unique feature of the Tanita InnerScan range is that it offers you a snap shot of your inner health by giving you a "Metabolic Age" rating. Your metabolic age is best described as the age in which your internal organs are functioning.

Ideally you would aim for a metabolic age that is your actual age or lower. Metabolic Age takes into account the visceral fats (dangerous fats around your organs linked to heart disease and diabetes), hydration and what is known as "Basal Metabolic Rate".

Your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the rate your body burns calories (energy expenditure) to maintain itself, be it digesting food, muscle movement or reproducing new cells. Your BMR is responsible for a large portion of your daily caloric usage (50-80%), what differs in the rate that your body uses this energy is the amount of lean muscle present in your body. For example those that have higher amounts of lean muscle in their body will be burning calories at a faster rate (closer to the 80% end of the scale) even when relaxing, compared to those with less lean muscle (closer to 50%). To boost your lean muscle mass it is recommended to have a diet high in proteins as well as regularly partaking in resistance training.

Tanita's InnerScan BIA technology also offers a detailed reading of the actual weight of muscle present in your body, which is an excellent way to keep track of weight bearing training results. Keeping track of your muscle weight offers a gauge as to how much lean muscle is in your body contributing to your BMR.
