Can Food Ensure Eternal Beauty?

These days we are surrounded by plastic surgery, botox and endless beauty creams. The aim of these is to make us appear youthful to our peers and meet society's ideals of beauty.

So why not get back to basics and find out the natural ways to get hair to shine, nails to grow and skin to glow without going under the knife or forking out hundreds of dollars? It's no secret that keeping our body healthy requires regular exercise and maintaining a balanced diet. You get out what you put in, and this rings true in the case of our diets and the overall glow of our skin, health of our hair and quality of our nails. Have a look at the tips below and see what you can do and eat your way to eternal beauty.

  • There are certain foods that help keep our skin looking fresh. Try eating a variety of fish like fresh tuna, mackerel and sardines. They contain essential fatty acids that leave your skin looking healthy and moisturised.

  • Leafy green vegetables like spinach have a high water content and contain vitamins and minerals that also nourish the skin. Try cooking with extra virgin olive oil as it contains antioxidants and good fats that help promote skin nourishment.

  • Fruits high in antioxidants like Vitamin A, C and E such as berries, mango and avocado are the best fruits to eat to enhance the texture of your skin.

  • Foods like wheat flour, tuna and nuts are rich in selenium which is also good for the skin and help to protect against sun damage.

  • What we drink also affects our skin, hair and nails. Aim to drink at least eight glasses of water each day as it helps flush out the toxins in your skin. Water also helps keep hair soft and shiny as a quarter of the weight of a strand of hair is made up of water.

  • Include protein in your diet for healthy hair. It will give your hair strength and prevent breakage and split ends. Iron is also important for healthy hair as it carries oxygen to the hair so include plenty of green, leafy vegetables in your diet.

  • To prevent hair loss, incorporate zinc into your diet. Meat and seafood contain high levels of zinc. To encourage hair growth, try eating spices like turmeric and cumin. Berries, citrus fruits, melons, grapes and small amounts of raisins also help.

  • Don't forget your vitamins! Vitamin A makes your scalp healthy and is found in carrots. Vitamin B and C is for hair growth and colour, so try eating fruits like banana and strawberries. These vitamins will help prevent hair from splitting.

  • Iron and protein is key for healthy nails. If your nails are brittle or have vertical ridges it may be a result of low iron intake. Try eating iron rich foods like whole grains, liver, pumpkin seeds, prunes, molasses and leafy green vegetables.

  • If your nails crack or break easily your body may not be getting enough protein. Foods such as milk, cheese and eggs provide the body with protein.

So next time you do your grocery shopping, why not leave the beauty products on the shelf and opt for these fresh foods to get the results you want!
