Australians turn to Gluten Free

More and more Australians are becoming aware of gluten and the significant implications for those who are allergic to it. But what is gluten? And why can it cause such pain and discomfort?

Gluten is the general name for a protein found in wheat, oats, rye, and barley. It gives bread its elastic texture and helps glue bread and cakes together so they don't crumble. However, more of us are finding that we have a gluten intolerance signaled by such symptoms as bloating, indigestion, abdominal pain, stomach cramps, fatigue or unexplained headaches. If you regularly suffer from these symptoms you may be suffering from Coeliac disease.

According to the Coeliac Society of Australia, Coeliac disease is one of the most underdiagnosed, yet most common chronic diseases. It is a condition that affects as many as 1 in 100 people in Australia yet 75% of those affected don't know they have the disease. Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disease, whereby the body produces antibodies that attack its own tissues. For people with Coeliac disease, this is triggered by the gluten in wheat, rye, barley and oats. If left undiagnosed, the disease may lead to the possibility of severe consequences such as bowel cancer and osteoporosis.

With increasing numbers of Australians now being diagnosed as gluten intolerant or having Coeliac disease, food manufacturers are recognizing this condition. Food packaging often indicates if the product is gluten free, and dedicated gluten free foods are gaining popularity on supermarket shelves.

One such range is Simply Wize, a new gluten free brand that has recently released innovative gluten free bread mixes that put the "elastic texture" and "glue" back into bread. In an Australian first, Simply Wize Crusty Bread Mix and French Stick Mix produce delicious crusty bread that looks and tastes just like its conventional counterpart. It is outstanding among gluten-free bread products, which are usually made in a cake tin or breadmaker and produce a bread that is often very dense and bland or tastes like savoury cake. Retailing at around $5.95, Simply Wize Crusty Bread and French Stick Mixes are found in supermarkets nationally.

This means that if you suffer from Coeliac Disease, you no longer have to go without your favourite foods. They will be alongside other innovative gluten-free Simply Wize products such as Simply Wize Gnocchi, Deli Wafers, Lavosh and Corn Crunch.
